A Brief History of the Beetle

With over 21.5 million first-generation models sold, it remains one of the most popular cars ever made. Praised for its innovative, economical design, the Beetle was compact, practical, affordable, and easy to maintain. Its air-cooled engine required less upkeep and was simpler to repair than many American cars of the time. The Beetle became a symbol of freedom and individuality, and in the U.S., it was embraced by the counter-culture movement as a sign of peace and unity. Volkswagen retired the Beetle in 2019, exactly 70 years after it first reached American roads.
