First produced in 1945 and originally called simply the “Volkswagen,” the Beetle quickly earned international fame for its unique design, reliability, and affordability. Known around the world by names like Käfer, Vocho, Fusca, and Maggiolino, over 21.5 million first-generation Beetles were sold, making it one of the most successful cars in automotive history.

Its air-cooled rear engine made it easy to maintain and repair, and its simple design helped it transcend generations. In the U.S., the Beetle became a symbol of individuality, peace, and counterculture. After more than seven decades, Volkswagen ended production in 2019 — marking the end of an automotive era.
