A Brief History of the Karmann Ghia
First introduced in Europe in 1955 and in the U.S. in 1956, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14 was the result of a collaboration between German automaker Volkswagen, coachbuilder Karmann, and the legendary Ghia design studio in Italy. The car blended the reliability of the Beetle with sleek, handcrafted bodywork more often seen on exotic Italian sports cars.
Over its production life, Volkswagen built approximately 450,000 Karmann Ghias, with only 80,000 convertibles, making open-top models like this increasingly sought after. While never marketed as a performance car, its low-slung body and elegant design offered a more refined driving experience than the Beetle, making it a cult favorite among collectors today.
